Prince of Persia fans, rejoice — Ubisoft Montréal is still chipping away at Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake.
The project was announced back in 2020, and while the idea of a remake of a true Ubisoft classic was enticing, the art direction left a lot to be desired. The game's development has been turbulent ever since, with several delays, and production handed over to the Canadian studio. It's been very quiet for a while as development was essentially started over.
Now, though, a short update on the game's status comes via everyone's favourite social network, Twitter X:
Ubisoft says Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has "passed an important internal milestone" and that "development is progressing". That's all we're getting for now, but it's at least good to know the project is still alive.

As good as the first one was, I dunno… I think my wallet is getting remake fatigue. I try to pry it open to spend more money, but then it tells me to go do something new or touch grass or something. It says “you’ll get you nostalgia fix in an hour and drop it.” “Unless it’s Resident Evil,” yeah, my wallet keeps telling me this.
When this comes out, it will immediately be ready for another remake.
Thats a very vague statement. I feel theyl say that about Splinter Cell and Beyond Good and Evil 2
A statement straight out of the vaporware handbook.
Like many of Ubisoft games....I'll see you all in 4-8 years time.
I'm still excited for it. Sands of Time is an all-time classic so if they need more time to give it the care it needs so be it. Looking forward to how it turns out when they re-reveal it.
At what point do they realize that this is essentially a pointless endeavour? Okay that is probably over the top but I just don't see any real clamour for this at all and never have. Great games on the PS2, nicely upscaled on PS3 and well wouldn't a port of those of sufficed? Hardly seems worth all the effort, time and at this point overspend that has gone into it.
Just finished playing the 2008 reboot!. Despite some flaws here and there, a very chill, relaxing experience. Would love to see a sequel or exploration of this universe.
I think the aspect of the game that surprised me the most was actually the character of Elika. This might seem like an odd comparison, but you know how in FFXV everybody loves the chocobros in battle or in exploration because they feel very well realised with their own specific identities, with little animations and quirks that are unique to them, that really makes the characters come across more natural or human like, instead of them just walking alongside you in pure silence.
It's a similar thing with Elika. Unlike some a.i in videogames that can be incredibly annoying, at times being more of an obstacle than of any help, Elika is quite the opposite. If she's in the way while climbing, she will actually MOVE out of the way of her own accord in such a natural manner that it really surprised me. Or how when you jump to the floor and she jumps right after, she might fall into the prince's arms( which is the cutest thing ever😭). I need to pee extremely bad, so I'm struggling to articulate my thoughts, but in conclusion what I'm trying to say is that Ubisoft developed a very good a.i companion.
I think when it comes to conversations regarding videogame a.i, Elika definitely deserves to be remembered in the same way for example Ellie from the original last of us game is talked about. I dunno man, something about Elika just feels very ahead of its time if you know what I mean.😂😂😂
And that concludes my poorly written thoughts.😂
That remake is taking a long time.but my backlog of games is huge now.so take your time.word up son
As with all remasters and remakes if you are going to do it, then do it well, otherwise don't bother. It needs to be worthy of the original.
In terms of story and puzzles little needs to change, it's pretty timeless. What does need to be updated is the combat which was pretty bad even at release, some QoL features and the obligatory fresh coat of paint.
A shame the voice actress for Farah did one game and changed career to become a lawyer (good for her, sad for us) as the chemistry between her and the Prince (Yuri Lowenthal) was core to the game. Hopefully whoever they get will be just as good.
A re-release of the PS3 collection with a nice coat of paint would be good enough for me to dive in again.
@homelesscretin Not poorly written at all, agreed with every word... apart from the peeing part. lol
I know it got grief from many circles, but I loved PoP 2008, sadly we will never see a sequel. I get peoples criticisms that the game was almost a rhythm action game, and not what they wanted from PoP, but I liked it regardless. Combat wasn't great, but it never has been in PoP (or most Ubi games) imho.
But what we did get was a wonderful world, characters and story combined with enjoyable, if simple, gameplay. Music was wonderful and the visual delight of restoring areas never got old. It's actually my second favourite PoP after Sands of Time, and have replayed it often.
I know we will never see a sequel for, and never see it's story to the conclusion, where I assume that ragtag boy will marry Elika and become the fabled Prince. A shame.
P.S. do you know there is a story DLC? It's not long so it's value may be questionable, but I enjoyed it. Could always watch on Youtube.
@themightyant Ooooof how did I forget to mention the music!. Such a stunning soundtrack, and I think what added to the delight of restoring areas was THAT specific track that would play whenever you healed a fertile ground.
I heard about the DLC and then found out it was eight quid on the ps store? Which is quite costly for like three hours worth of content😂. I'll definitely give a watch on YouTube, but apparently it ends on a cliffhanger which kinda sucks😣.
Regarding the problem with combat I think the same can be said for the parkour. They're both very fun systems but unfortunately lack depth. Funnily enough FFXV comes to mind again, the combat on screen looked quite dynamic and complex when in actuality it was quite simple. Again not bad mind you, just a little simple.
Throughout the game you do gain new powers that you can use by pressing the triangle button on certain plates and this unlocks new forms of traversal. Again it's all very fun and looks very spectacular on screen but you soon realise that all the powers are very samey. There are two powers that are incredibly similar in fact, the hand of ormazd and the other one that has you jumping across large stretches of land. I did love the latter however. It looks really cool in motion.
Honestly I think this being my first ever POP could be why I enjoyed it so much😂. I didn't really have any expectations as I had nothing to compare it to because I had never played a POP game before.
Would love to see any sort of continuation for this story be it in book form or comic.
@homelesscretin Sadly fanfiction is likely the best you will get. Not usually my thing at all but I remember reading one that was recommended after it was clear we would never get a sequel which was quite good. Was at least a bit of closure.
Glad you enjoyed regardless.
Considering this has gotten the Metroid Prime 4 treatment where development was shifted to an entirely different studio and rebooted, it's probably fair that we haven't seen it since that first reveal. Just look at how long Prime 4 has been kept under wraps. Sure, it's a remake and not a new game but it'll still take some time, especially if they want it to look better than that reveal.
Take the time, I can wait. Got Two Thrones PS2, 2008 PS3 and Forgotten Sands Wii to play anyways and they are delightful.
2008 is awkward at times but Forgotten Sands Wii is great and progressed the most with it. Two Thrones played the first few hours still.
I have yet to wait for more Rayman even. Got bits more of Origins to finish. Got to play 2 on some platform, played and own 3 in digital/physical PS2 form. Got 1 on PS Classic/Rayman Redemption to try.
Red Steel is going anywhere either glad I own both now. Red Steel 2 in VR Ubisoft when?
@Czar_Khastik it's funny and might be true at the same time
